Proton-Proton Fusion Chain in Stars
1938PhysicsNuclear & Plasma PhysicsFrameworkfoundational
Bethe & Critchfield, "The Formation of Deuterons by Proton Combination" (Physical Review 54, 248-254, 15 August 1938; DOI 10.1103/PhysRev.54.248). Calculated the rate of the first step of the proton-proton chain (two protons fusing to a deuteron with positron emission), showing it could power a star like the Sun.

Connections
- is precursor to Carbon-Nitrogen-Oxygen Cycle (Energy Production in Stars)basis: reasoned
Bethe's 1939 paper extends the 1938 proton-proton calculation (same author, same stellar-energy problem) with the CNO cycle to account for stellar energy output in full.
