Carbon-Nitrogen-Oxygen Cycle (Energy Production in Stars)
1939Bethe, "Energy Production in Stars" (Physical Review 55, 434-456, 1 March 1939; DOI 10.1103/PhysRev.55.434). Worked out the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen catalytic cycle as the dominant hydrogen-to-helium fusion route in hotter stars and showed that proton-proton plus CNO fusion together account for stellar energy output. Bethe received the 1967 Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to the theory of nuclear reactions, especially stellar energy production.
