Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR)
1988Baibich et al., "Giant Magnetoresistance of (001)Fe/(001)Cr Magnetic Superlattices" (Physical Review Letters 61, 2472-2475, 21 November 1988; DOI 10.1103/PhysRevLett.61.2472). Showed that the electrical resistance of Fe/Cr multilayers depends strongly on whether neighbouring magnetic layers are aligned, tying electrical transport to electron spin in a way usable for sensing. Albert Fert and Peter Gruenberg shared the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physics "for the discovery of Giant Magnetoresistance" (nobelprize.org API, checked 2026-10-30). Root of the spintronics lineage.

Connections
- is precursor to Room-Temperature Tunnel Magnetoresistancebasis: reasoned
GMR established that resistance depends on the relative alignment of magnetic layers; tunnel magnetoresistance is the same spin-dependent-transport idea realised across an insulating barrier. Reasoned dependency, not a verified citation.
- is precursor to Spin-Transfer Torque (Current-Driven Magnetization Switching)basis: reasoned
Slonczewski's torque prediction concerns spin-polarized current through magnetic multilayers, the structures and spin-dependent transport that GMR established. Reasoned dependency, not a verified citation.
