Topological Quantum Field Theory
1988Edward Witten's foundational paper (Commun. Math. Phys. 117, 353, 1988) established topological quantum field theory as a framework connecting QFT path integrals to topological invariants of manifolds (Donaldson theory, Chern-Simons theory). Michael Atiyah's companion 1988 paper gave the mathematical axiomatization of the same concept -- the two are usually cited together as co-foundational. The original candidate-list citation ("Commun. Math. Phys. 121, 351, 1989") does not match any real record; the correct citation is 1988, not 1989.
