Quark-Gluon Plasma as a Near-Perfect Fluid

2005
PhysicsNuclear & Plasma PhysicsEmpirical Resultfoundational

RHIC's four experiments (BRAHMS, PHENIX, PHOBOS, STAR) jointly announced in April 2005 that the quark-gluon plasma created in heavy-ion collisions behaves as a strongly-coupled, nearly-perfect (very low viscosity) fluid rather than the weakly-interacting gas originally expected. The landmark OpenAlex record here is Gyulassy & McLerran's synthesizing review (Nucl. Phys. A 750, 30) rather than one of the four original experimental collaboration papers -- OpenAlex records it with a 2004 publication year (online-first date), while the historically-cited announcement date is April 2005; flagged rather than silently resolved.
