Nuclear Fission Interpretation (Liquid-Drop Splitting)
1939Meitner & Frisch, "Disintegration of Uranium by Neutrons: a New Type of Nuclear Reaction" (Nature 143, 239-240, 11 February 1939; DOI 10.1038/143239a0). The first correct physical explanation of the Hahn-Strassmann barium result: a heavy nucleus can deform like a liquid drop and divide into two lighter nuclei, releasing on the order of 200 MeV by mass-energy equivalence. Coined the term fission by analogy with biological cell division. Lise Meitner, who had worked with Hahn for decades, was in exile in Sweden at the time and was not named in the 1944 Nobel Prize; this node lists her as an originator because the explanation is hers and Frisch's, not Hahn's.

Connections
- is precursor to Liquid-Drop Theory of Nuclear Fissionbasis: reasoned
Bohr and Wheeler's liquid-drop theory formalizes the nuclear-deformation picture introduced in the Meitner-Frisch interpretation into a quantitative fission-barrier theory. Same liquid-drop framing; Bohr was in direct contact with Frisch in early 1939.
- is precursor to Physical Detection of Nuclear Fission Fragmentsbasis: reasoned
Frisch's paper is the physical test of the interpretation he co-authored one week earlier (11 vs 18 February 1939, both Nature 143): it reports direct physical evidence for the division the Meitner-Frisch letter proposed.
- enables Chicago Pile-1 / Self-Sustaining Fission Chain Reactionbasis: reasoned
Chicago Pile-1 (1942) is a self-sustaining fission chain reaction, which presupposes that heavy nuclei fission under neutron bombardment. Linked with the looser "enables" rather than "is_application_of": the pile also depends on later chain-reaction results (neutron multiplication, moderation) that are not Basic nodes here. Tier 1 SS9: this is the only edge from the chain into the applied tree; the separate active "Nuclear Fission" innovation is deliberately not linked a second time.
