JWST Early Massive Galaxies

JWST observations (Labbe et al., 2023, building on earlier 2022 candidates) found several galaxy candidates from just ~600 million years after the Big Bang that appear unexpectedly massive and mature for their age, in tension with standard galaxy-formation timelines -- an actively unfolding result, not yet a settled fact (some candidates have since had their masses or redshifts revised on spectroscopic follow-up). Status set to emerging rather than foundational to reflect this.
