GW170817 Neutron Star Merger

2017
PhysicsRelativity (Special & General)Empirical Resultfoundational

First gravitational-wave detection of a binary neutron star merger, observed simultaneously across gravitational waves (LIGO/Virgo) and the electromagnetic spectrum (gamma-ray burst, optical kilonova, and more) -- the founding event of multimessenger astronomy and observational confirmation that neutron star mergers produce heavy elements via the r-process. Distinct discovery from GW150914 (a black hole merger, no electromagnetic counterpart possible).
