Independent co-discovery of the J/psi meson (a charm-anticharm bound state) by Burton Richter's group at SLAC and Samuel Ting's group at BNL, announced jointly Nov 11 1974 (the "November Revolution"), confirming the charm quark predicted by the 1970 Glashow-Iliopoulos-Maiani (GIM) mechanism. Richter and Ting shared the 1976 Nobel Prize in Physics for this -- 1976 is the Nobel year, not the discovery year.
