Asymptotic Freedom
1973Independent, simultaneous discovery by David Gross & Frank Wilczek and by David Politzer (both Phys. Rev. Lett. 30, 1973) that non-Abelian gauge theories (like QCD) have a coupling constant that weakens at short distances/high energies -- explaining why quarks behave as nearly free particles inside hadrons at high energy, and establishing QCD as the correct theory of the strong force. Gross, Politzer and Wilczek shared the 2004 Nobel Prize. Bare "asymptotic freedom" is not a safe backfill term (picks up unrelated stemming noise, e.g. Pauli's spin-statistics theorem); a "non-Abelian gauge" qualifier is required.
